Summary
Rupert Maleczek is Architect, Researcher and Consultant, currently working as Senior Scientist at the institute of structure and design, at the University Innsbruck, with Prof. Schinegger and Rutzinger.
Rupert Maleczek, received his Architectural diploma degree from the University of Innsbruck in 2007, and finalized his PhD-Thesis about “Linear Folded Stripes” in April 2014 with distinction.
Besides his expertise in structural origami, Rupert’s research field is the relation between, architectural design, structure, self-organization, lightweight structures, computation and fabrication.
He’s research interests lie not only in the geometric constraints of folded structures, but also in the architectural-, spatial- and structural properties of the possible structures. His research is also focused on the relation between form, structure, performance, materiality and digital as well as physical production. These interests lead to numerous large-scale demonstrators that were generated through coding and then digitally fabricated. Among this large scale experiments is one of the largest self-supporting structures entirely made from paper. Ongoing projects in close cooperation with students are currently in development.
The last years he worked at the university of Innsbruck at the Institute of structure and design (koge) founded by Eda Schaur, and now led by Kristina Schinegger and Stefan Rutzinger. Rupert is a demanded speaker and asked to present his diverse work form different viewpoints in various fields.
During he’s time in Innsbruck, he was Organizer of several Conferences, international research gatherings, and is co- publisher and author of several books and publications, as well as a reviewer for conferences and peer reviewed journals.
If possible he’s research and investigations are developed in close relation with he’s students. This technique known as research driven education, allow an exchange of state of the art research, and creative input between teacher and student.
Besides his academic career, he is involved in competitions and geometry consulting for diverse building projects. Especially digital and parametric strategies related to optimization and fabrication in manifold forms is his field of consulting.
He is founder and publisher of Archispass.org, an architectural blog, mainly written in German, that had in his best times 60.000 unique visitors per month. He is co-founder of the architectural collective “Archiwaste”, that is active in various fields, from folded structures to cardboard as building material. Archiwaste is participating in various exhibitions, publications and workshops.
Rupert presents his research all over the world, and publishes as main author as well as co-author with various partners He is leading workshops all over the world, for example at the Shape to Fabrication Conference, at the AA-Summer School in Ivrea, the 6OSME conference or the Advanced architectural geometry conference, or at the Design Modelling Symposium in Berlin.
