The i.sd, University of Innsbruck in cooperation with itke, University of Stuttgart designed and built a large scale architectural prototype to demonstrate the potential of curved-line folded components for free-form structural surfaces, process-oriented design, including a highly computational workflow from design to fabrication.
The pavilion is part of successful series of experimental structures unifying basic research in computational geometry, material behaviour, digital fabrication methods and simple craftsman strategies to “architectural simplexities”. The structure was developed as part of a public exhibition at the University Innsbruck.
The development of the structure is based on the interdependency of curved folded elements, their assembly strategies and the relation to shell structures. The pavilions development is based on a simple fabrication principle that is based on curved fold-lines generated by complex geometric and mechanic constraints.
The 2200 curved folded elements are fabricated from two different types of paper. The white paper sheets are 0.2mm thick and weight 400g/m²and the pink sheet is 0.1mm thick and weights 300g/m². The overall structure weights 120 kg and covers 20 m². It spans 6 meters and is more than 4.5 metres high, and has a surface of 44m². The pavilion was fabricated and assembled on site within 5 very intense days.
